Can you create Desktop applications with Kotlin just like you can with Java?

I want to learn Java because I want to develop PC and Mobile apps.

I would definitely go for Kotlin if I would only focus ony mobile apps. Because it’s kinda the new technology and it’s smart to follow the recent trend.

So, can I use Kotlin to develop average desktop applications that can run on Linux Windows and Mac?

I use both Linux and Windows O.S. So if I can’t write apps for a Linux PC at the same time, I will continue to learn Java and maybe learn Kotlin later.

Also, how does exactly developing desktop applications with Kotlin differ compared to using Java?

Can someone please enlighten me on these concepts?
