Advice – Kotlin Course or Start on a Project?

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, so please let me know if it’s not, and suggest a different place…

I’m relatively experienced in programming in R and Python, and recently wrote some Python code for a project that would be better as an app. (it’s all command line right now, no GUI)

I’m wondering if it’s better to just leverage my programming experience and learn Kotlin by recreating the functionality I have already, or start by going through a crash course in Kotlin?

Are there enough high level similarities between Python or R that I can leverage my experience?

What areas might I need to dig deeper into?
